It seems to me that the U.S. is the only country in the world that considers eating bugs gross. Every other country devours these creepy crawlers and enjoys their unique texture and taste. Surprisingly enough, the only thing that would freak out Americans about eating bugs is the texture of the creatures. The crispy exoskeleton and the gooey insides make for a weird sensation on the tongue and teeth. However, ignoring the strange texture, there are plenty of bugs that are said to have flavors akin to those that Americans love. For example, witchetty grub has been described to taste like nut flavored scrambled eggs and mild mozzarella, wrapped in a smoky phyllodough pastry. Witchetty grubs are found mainly in Australia though, so if you're looking for bugs to try that are closer to home, try some ants and termites. They tend to have a nutty yet sweet flavor to them. I've had a few bugs myself. Chocolate covered ants mostly and they're delicious! I found them in one of the supermarkets in the city. So if you're feeling adventurous (food-wise) google eating bugs or restaurants that serve bugs or places that sell bugs to eat and try them out! You never know, you might just end up loving them. (And grossing out friends and family at the same time!)
Bis Morgen!
I have plans to head to chinatown and try some deep-fried chocolate covered scorpion =D
ReplyDeleteIt's not so much the exoskeleton that bugs me about bugs though..its the bugs themselves. i is creeped out by them, so i know i wouldn't be able to eat them with a straight face.
Maybe ill give chocolate covered ants a try one day. but for whatever reason i feel braver with the scorpion than the ants. Aris is strange.
