Cultural Ecology

Hey All!

I just got out of my Cultural Ecology class. For those of you wondering what the heck cultural ecology is, here is a great example of something culturally ecologically food related. American Fast Food Changing. The article is about the changing views of fast food in the US. It is slowly but surely becoming an invention of the past. There is a huge movement towards higher quality foods for the same low prices. So, although the poor are still having trouble affording the "healthier" options, they understand the overwhelming importance of better quality foods. This is the beginning of a huge switch in American food culture. Within the next decade or so, healthier foods will become the norm rather than McDonalds, Taco Bell, and KFC. We can thank Subway (or Jared) and Chipotle for that. So, the next time you pass a restaurant serving healthier food options at a lower price, stop in and add your stomach to the growing movement.

Food Porn Daily

Hey All!

After a more serious blog post, I figured I'd get back to the fun side of food. How tasty it looks, where you can find it, who makes it, and why people should eat after reading my blog. I recently discovered that there is a site called Food Porn Daily. With a name like that, I'm shocked I never came across it before. Better late than never though. I definitely recommend you foodies to check it out. For a bit of a reason why...

Food Deserts

Hey All!

So from my last post you might be curious as to what exactly a food desert is. Well, it is what it sounds like. Any area in the industrialized world where healthy, affordable food is difficult to obtain. And yes, as you know from all my previous posts, Cleveland is a food desert. However, there are many attempts being made to add "water" (haha, get it?) to this desert. Some of these methods include community gardens, farmers markets, and co-ops. Unfortunately, due to the higher prices for healthier foods, there is little community support for co-ops and farmers markets, in particular. As you all know, I wouldn't mind paying a higher price for food that is not only healthier for me but also tastier. It pays off in the long run. And I strongly believe that this ideology should be the norm. So, whether or not you're living in a food desert, I HIGHLY suggest supporting co-ops, farmers markets, CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture), and any other source of healthy foods.

Zen

Hey All!

I am currently living in a food desert. How depressing is that?

Learning to Cook

Hey All!

This great comic reminded me of how much I miss cooking. One of the many unfortunates of being in college is not being able to cook. However, similar to as this comic portrays, when I am home I rarely cook. I just go out and eat. It's more convenient, less time consuming, I don't have to wash dishes, and... I live in New York City. Why the hell not should I go out and eat?

Anyhow, enjoy the comic! And if you have the opportunity to cook, don't take it for granted. Unless you're lazy and live in a food capital.
